Hello and welcome to West Wickle Times; the on-line replacement for The West Wickle Community Newsletter. Don’t worry, even though we have moved platforms, we are still dedicated to bringing you the latest news, events and happenings from across the borough.
We are, of course, aware of the controversy surrounding the move to a digital format, and we are sympathetic to readers who do not have easy access to the internet. But the march of technology is upon us. Advertising revenues are not what they were, and the unfortunate incidents following the adverts we carried for the home liposuction kits (court cases are still pending) did not entirely help matters.
Despite the misgivings of some readers, the letters we received on the switch to a web-based set-up were mostly positive. We do, however, understand the anxieties of the technophobes amongst you. Access to instant knowledge can, no doubt, have its downsides. Before the proliferation of on-line public encyclopaedias, a young man could tell his university friends an innocent tale of a dreamy summer spent back-packing along the French Alps with the actress Annie Jones, famed for playing the role of Jane ‘Plain-Jane-Super-Brain’ Harris on popular Australian soap Neighbours, without having his harmless ruse discovered and mercilessly scorned, even though he only said it for a laugh, causing him to deal with the issue in an inappropriate manner. Then, to add insult to injury, one of the nurses working on the hospital ward where said young man is convalescing could turn out to be a member of his mother’s racket-ball club and also a loud mouthed bitch.
Nevertheless, when all is said and done, we are extremely excited about our new venture and we hope you have as much pleasure reading it as we have writing it.
